I bought my son a new rod and reel for his 12th B-day. He strung the line and I tied it through the spool. When we turn the handle to reel it on to the spool the line guide rotates back and forth but the spool doesn't spin. It worked fine at Bass Pro Shops when he picked it out. Any ideas?

the is a spool drag on the right side of the reel next to the handle crank. It is small and round 1/2 inch in diameter. Do not confuse it with the line drag witch is directly under the hand crank. You need to tighten the spool drag. Rule of thumb tighten it to where the line barely comes out with a lure on it. You will want this a little tighter than normal since this is his first baitcast, this will help him from backlashing.
the drum spool drag is loose…. you need to tightn this up , so you can spool the line on…. good choise in reels..! ! !
Brent is right. You might check the star drag too. If it is backed all the way off it won’t reel either.
The line should not pass through the perforated spool. When you tie your line on like that it causes a bind on the spool shaft and prevents it from spinning as it should. Take line off and tie AROUND the spool using an arbor knot. Your reel should function fine after wards.
