why do right hand baitcast reels reel right handed?
A right handed baitcast reel is cast with the right hand and is switched to the left hand to retrieve with the right hand..... WHY ? A spinning reel for a right handed person is cast with the right hand and retrieved in with left hand, which seems and feel more natural {for a right handed person}. I know I can buy a left hand baitcast reel to cast and retrieve the same as my spinning gear but why are the two reels different ?
There are more right handed people in the world than left and right handed baitcast reels are easier to find, so there must be a good reason for the difference between the two styles of reels.

In the old days, (before they started making Left hand retrieve BC reels), it was common knowledge that due to the smaller "radius" of a BC reels handle it would be easier for most people to reel with their "strongest hand" because MOST people are more dexterous in their predominant/writing hand. (I guess the "Lefty's" didn't have enough numbers to warrant a design marketed to them til MUCH later! lol)
By the way, this info came direct from a Penn Rep...........I asked the same Q about 20 years ago.
Also, "old timer's" rods did not always have a trigger! Trigger BC rods are a fairly new concept, (like 50-60 years only!).
And like BP mentioned- It's easier to control the strike of a fish while grasping the reel than the rod, (I don't know any dedicated fishermen who grasp the rod ONLY when they strike or reel a BC- everyone has their hands "around" the reel & rod).
To sum up- It is a "dexterity" issue that various company's (years ago) did actual research to find out.
Personally?- I've tried Left-handed BC reels and they feel "out of control and awkward" for my taste. Thankfully, we now have the option of right or left hand retrieve on most reels.....
