A shorter rod will allow greater control for precisely placing casts. A longer rod will give greater leverage for longer casts. For small water fishing from a boat I’d go short, from shore I’d go with the longer rod.
Nonny has a valid point; however, you need to consider what type of action (the flexibility of the tip) is best for your typical fishing (light, medium, heavy). Ordinarily, I would go with a light or medium action rod with a smaller reel. This will give you the ability to finesse your lure more so than a heavier action rod.
